A beautiful Chinese girl fights for human future in Independence Day: Resurgence

Whose Independence Day is this?

An Independence Day is an anniversary of a nation’s independence or statehood. Most countries observe their respective independence days as national holidays. The Independence Day of the United State, the most famous Independence Day maybe, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence 240 years ago in 1776 on July 4 by the Continental. It declared that the thirteen American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.

The Independence Day of the United State is also moved onto the screen. Independence Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day,is a 2016 American science fiction adventure film directed by Roland Emmerich. It tells the story that 20 years after that time in the 1996 film Independence Day, the returning aliens again attack Earth with an advanced and unprecedented force during the twentieth anniversary of humanity’s victory against them on July 4. A group of young men steps forward bravely to fights for human future, and again the aliens are beaten.

Here the Independence Day of the United State becomes the Independence Day of the earth, because 20 years ago the day of July 4 was set to be the humanity’s victory day against the aliens. Since then, the United Nations have collaborated on the Earth Space Defense (ESD), an international military defense and research organization, and developed hybrid technology reverse-engineered from the invaders’ in anticipation that they would return.

Roland Emmerich wants more to make Chinese money than to make the film.

One of the defense bases is the moon space controlled by Chinese. And the Chinese commander, Jiang Lao, is sedulously described as a man lack of consideration for the whole and complete situation, but only to blindly blame others. In the beginning, the pilot disobeys the Chinese commander to save the faulty equipment with his ship, and he come into the base with the look of what you can do about it when criticized by the commander. The intolerant commander and the tolerant American pilot make sharp contrast.

Since it is a Chinese moon space, Chinese must be the official language. But only the beginning has some opening remarks in Chinese, and then everything is in English. It is understood that after all it is an American film.

Many Chinese products appear in the film. The milk from China Mengniu Dairy Company Limited is too delicious, so two guys scramble for it before they go to the fight.

And they use QQ software from Tencent Company for instant messaging. When the network is down, a close-up image of a baby penguin that is the logo of Tencent Company is specially shown.

This stacking of Chinese elements and products, somehow, makes the film the most evident Chinese theme in history. Every appearance of Chinese elements and products makes Chinese audiences laugh. Some people say the pilot beat the aliens after drinking Chinese milk, no matter how smart the aliens are.

“In fact, they are very interesting implantations in the film. It is very natural to have Chinese product there, because it is a Chinese moon space,” said Roland Emmerich. Truly it is. And it is the best explain for the implantations. But Roland Emmerich insisted that it was an expensive film, that is to say the film has many Chinese sponsors.

A beautiful Chinese girl, Angelababy, plays as Rain Lao, a Chinese pilot and lieutenant in ESD and the niece of ESD Moon Base commander Jiang Lao. Chinese girl is often seen in Hollywood films today, but under most circumstances, the Chinese actresses are just for eye candy. But, in the film, Rain, strong and brave, launches a counterattack against the aliens with her allies, which is really refreshing. In the fight, she is boldness and strong, and make the final efforts to protect the earth. The American pilot falls in love with her during the daily engagement. This is the typical American white man and Chinese woman love story.

Anyway, super director Roland Emmerich abruptly makes the American theme film into a Chinese theme film to tell the world that even though there are not aliens, the earth situation has changed, because the Chinese market is the big box office. You want to make Chinese money? Just use the Chinese elements and feelings.

But many Chinese opinion leaders suggest that the whole film expresses just one thing, i.e., the American confidence. The Aliens contact Americans first when they arrive on earth. The Americans act as vanguard. To some extent, the Americans think they have the ability to connect the world and win the final victory; thereby they can lead and unite the world including China, though the base is destroyed again and again. The film embodies the tolerance of the United States by showing every battle led by Americans. Roland Emmerich never expected the striking contrast of Chinese taking a place in the film and the audiences’ remarks, which is just the opposite to what Roland Emmerich wished.

Roland Emmerich not only ruins the film, but also ruins the Independence Day.

The film is under kinds of criticism, but mostly negative. 20 years could make an artist successful, but it also ruins a director. The film tells almost the old story that the aliens come, and the earth fights back, even the method to beat the aliens is the same as 20 years ago to carry a nuclear bomb to go inside the alien mother ship in a kamikaze suicide way. Roland Emmerich makes no progress in 20 years. In the plots arrangement, it seems that he wants to inosculate love, fiction, sadness and despair as a whole in just 2hours. And, the film has no central character, and the scene for every people is nearly the same.

No matter how hard Roland Emmerich tried, Independence Day: Resurgence is the bad sequel of the first. In the new century, the film industry is pushed forward by the progress of science and technology, especially the computer and information technology. The image design and visual effect of characters has been greatly improved, compared with the past. And the film making has constantly improved to catch people’s eyes. Nowadays, it is hard to make audiences to applaud for a film with special effects, powerful monsters, and heartquake actions, as for many years they have been in the infiltration of American films with all the pomp and circumstances.

Independence Day: Resurgence can never reproduce the success of 1996 film Independence Day. Roland Emmerich only wanted to make money by hook with the in the name of Independence Day. But, no one will pay for the third.
