The Chinese martial arts plot.

There are many killer films, but no one is
like Killer Joe. In many cases,
killer films mainly described
the cool killer who killed the enemies in cold blood, got things done in
minutes, and showed their dazzling skills to Kill and rob. Killer Joe is a killer film combined with family tragedy and ethics
that make the film different. In the film, a young man in trouble, a ramshackle
father, a retarded sister, an unmerciful stepmother, and a feminine and
handsome killer, become the protagonists of the story. The open story is that
the son in trouble incites his father to employ a killer to kill his mother to
get her insurance money, but the story behind is really worth scrutiny. Directed
by William Friedkin, Killer Joe stars Matthew
McConaughey, Emile Hirsch, Juno Temple, Gina Gershon, and Thomas
Haden Church.

There are two plots that associate the girl
Dottie with Chinese martial arts.

The first is that the brother, Chris, meets
his naked sister Dottie in his dream. Dottie plays with a lizard, and then
comes to his room. Suddenly, Dottie takes off her pajamas and stare at him.
Then Dottie poses a Wing Chun posture and disappears.

The second is that Dottie studies Chinese martial arts from TV. After talking, Chris and his father decide to kill his mother, and they invite the killer Joe to come for the negotiation at home. When Joe comes, he knocks at the door, but on one answer. Joe opens the door himself and finds that Dottie is at home by herself, and she is studying at home the Chinese martial arts from the Chinese motion film in TV. She studies seriously, and every gesture and motion are full of joy.

The Chinese
martial arts are to underline the poor girl.

People would feel so bad and uncomfortable
for Dottie’s story. Dottie is only 12 years old, abandoned by her mother, and
lives with her brother and father in an abnormal family. She seldom goes out,
as if she is in house arrest. From the film we know that Dottie is mentally
abnormal. The brother Chris has an illicit relationship with his
sister Dottie, and makes her pregnant. When Chris and their father hire killer
Joe to kill the mother, Dottie is appointed as retainer by Joe and becomes his
sex dolls. In the end, desperate Dottie shoots her brother, father, and Joe. So
to speak, this handicapped girl experiences several terrible things that most
people would never experience even one.

First, the Chinese martial arts plots are
to underline the poor girl’s situation. We all know that film art comes from
life, but above life. That is why art is called art. The desire, aspirations, and
vision that cannot be completed in real life can be met through the film art
forms. That’s the movie charm. But we all know that stories in film are not true,
and something like Chinese martial arts in the film are not true, either. The Chinese
martial arts after artistic adaption are for motion shows, and enrich the
delight to watch the film, which is fit for both Chinese and other kinds of
martial arts in the film. It is a basic common sense that you cannot learn
martial arts from the film or TV. The film implies the girl’s tragedy with the
learning martial arts from the film plot.

Second, the Chinese martial arts are the
careful selection for the film, and it is determined by the practice feature of
Chinese martial arts. There is a unique practice phase of non-confrontation
single-man exercise called routine exercise in Chinese martial arts
practice. People will practice in the fixed motion mode that was set as regular
mode by former master. The routine exercise sums up and hints the smart
forms to attack and defense. But the forms must be told, and then you know how
to use it. I think the routine exercise gives the film people the inspiration,
because when people practice routine exercise alone, waving their hands,
kicking their legs, it looks like idiot in unknowing people’s eyes, just like the
girl studies martial arts alone in front of the TV.

But, does it say that Chinese martial arts
are fit for abnormal people in the film? I don’t know. It is just a
speculation.
The post The girl studies Chinese martial arts from TV in Killer Joe first appeared on On Film.

The
girl in Chinese chi-pao.

Every nation in the world has their own
unique clothes & accessories that was long time evolved with the culture, environment
and history. These clothes & accessories have different meaning as the time
changes. Take Chinese chi-pao, or Cheongsam, for example. Chi-pao is the Chinese
traditional costume, hailed as the quintessence of Chinese culture. Though there
are still a lot of controversies about the definition and origin time, chi-pao is
still one of the most gorgeous phenomena and forms in China’s long dress
culture.

It is generally believed that chi-pao formed in 1920s when it became the most popular female costume in China. In 1929, it was decided as one of the national dresses. In 1950s it was criticized as Feudalism dross and was snubbed. After 1980s, as traditional culture was reevaluated in China, and with the influence of film and television culture, fashion show, beauty pageant, and so on, chi-pao began to revive till now. It even was designated as female diplomatic dress in 1984. From the 1990 Beijing Asian Games on, chi-pao was the ceremonial dress for Olympic Games, Asian Games, international conferences and exhibition held in China. In 2011, Cheongsam handmade craft has approved as the national intangible cultural heritage. In November 2014, at the twenty-second APEC meeting in Beijing, the Chinese government chose cheongsam as the dress of the leaders’ ladies of the participating countries.

Maybe there many films show the image of
Chinese females in chi-pao, but there are few films show the image of white
females in chi-pao. Kill Bill: Volume 1
is one seen up to present. Kill Bill:
Volume 1 (or simply Kill
Bill), a 2003 American martial arts film written and directed
by Quentin Tarantino, stars Uma Thurman Lucy Liu, Michael
Madsen, Daryl Hannah and Vivica A. Fox and David Carradine. The
film tells the story of revenge. After the killers try to kill her and her
unborn child, the leading lady begins her revenge. Her journey takes her to
Japan, where she battles the Tokyo yakuza.

One of the female killers by Jules is
dressed in chi-pao. Sorry, but it is really awful.

It
is embarrassed for most foreign girls to put on Chinese chi-pao.

In China, there is a saying in the fashion
world that God has written a “Bible” for every Western woman, but
only one Chinese chi-pao for all the Chinese women. Think about it that this
really makes sense. Western females really do not fit to wear cheongsam. The
Western woman who put on the Chinese cheongsam is really a bit awful, because
her body, temperament, and gesture are inharmonious with chi-pao.

Chinese and white females are both women,
but why they look so different when they are in chi-pao? There are reasons.

In the eyes of the Chinese people, in
addition to fit the body, the temperament of women wearing cheongsam is also
very important. Chinese often emphasize being implicit and reserved, which
coincided with the Western women, so even if the Western women body is very
suitable to wear the cheongsam, but people will feel strange from the Chinese
perspective.

Compared to foreign women, Chinese female body
is relatively small. A Chinese female wearing cheongsam will be more delicate,
with the flavor of a small woman. But with a wide shoulder, foreign women
wearing cheongsam will give people the magnificent feeling, lack of the sense
of the beautiful cheongsam.

Foreign females’ bodies are more buxom. When
wearing cheongsam, although a woman with larger chest looks more feminine,
but if the chest is too plump, the women will lose the elegant charm. Most
China women’s breast size is still relatively moderate, so it is very fit to wear
a cheongsam!

Gentle and graceful posture wearing chi-pao
significantly fit the figure, and especially those women with slender waist and
round hips look better-looking. Many foreign women’s buttocks are too large, and
sometimes the chi-pao even deform when being dressed. And the body looks
disproportional, and the original ancient charm of cheongsam is lost.

As a traditional Chinese dress, cheongsam
is a Chinese characteristic, specially designed for Chinese women. It can best
embody the charm and posture of Chinese women. If a foreign woman wants to put
on a chi-pao, remember to choose the very right chi-pao.

Look at the picture below, you can find how beautiful the Chinese woman wearing a chi-pao is.

The
highlight is the design of the alien language with the aid of Chinese culture.

One typical nature of science fiction films
is that it is very burning for the original authors, the film makers, and the
audiences. Without sound and image, sometimes the original works are more unreadable.
Take Story of Your Life by Ted
Chiang for an example, in the story a nonlinear time language thinking model is
constructed. The story about the communication between humans and aliens focuses
on the most basic thing: Language. In the writing, the language of the alien
seems to be a living creature. No one has ever made the language so detailed
and charming. The unexpected but destined end gives the reader a great impact. Well
received as Chiang’s short fiction works are, they have won four Nebula
awards, four Hugo awards, the John W. Campbell Award for Best New
Writer, four Locus awards, and others.

Story of Your Life is put on screen in 2016, i.e., Arrival, directed by Denis Villeneuve and written by Eric Heisserer, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma. The film reconstructs the story of the original work that is beyond imagination. The rigorous logic, mysterious atmosphere, and unusual scientific theory give audiences tremendous shock. First, the octopus-shaped visual extraterrestrial creatures present a mysterious terror in the combination of music and environment. As the story progresses, the strange alien shapes somehow make people nonexclusive. Alien aircraft modeling is also very different and textured. With the strange sound effects, the effect is odd and good.

From the perspective of pure Linguistics,
the film discusses relationships between different species and individuals, the
paradox between linear time and free will, and the collision and fusion of
thinking patterns in different language systems. The film is a response to
today’s society i.e., the importance of communication. This is the exquisite
part, the design of the alien language. In former science fiction films, all
aliens speak fluent English, or make strange ah hum sound. Based on the
description of the original story, the visual language of the seven-limbed
aliens that is rich in meaning is very imaginative. Using the brush painting
style in Chinese culture, language image that is artistic and corresponding to Chinese
cycle philosophy thought is created, which makes the film successful.

The Chinese
brush painting and Philosophy thought.

In the film, the alien language is shown in
the way of visual Chinese brush painting, which is creative and
imaginative. Just like Chinese characters written in square, the alien words
are written in circle. With the mixture of water and ink, the alien language
expresses the meaning in the painting image that is an amazing work of art if
without the bizarre and horrible background of alien war.

The Chinese brush painting, the picture
drawn by regulating the concentration of water and ink, is a form of
painting. More often, it is considered as a traditional Chinese painting.
The basic brush painting uses water and ink, painting in black and white.
The advanced brush painting includes colorful flowers-and-birds painting.
The latter is also called as color ink painting. As the unique materials, Chinese
brush and Chinese ink mixed with water, and depending on the amount of water,
could be divided as thick ink, light ink, dry ink, and wet ink, and different
shade level as black, white, and ash could be drawn. There are two major
features. One is the artistic effect of complete blend like milk and water in a
flowing and lucid style, because of mixture of water and ink in the dense-and-thin
level drawn. The other is that it is fit for analogous and ambiguous image
feature that gives people rich imagination, and it is the most fascinating artistic
conception.

Below is a typical Chinese brush painting. You can see why the alien language in Arrival makes great success.

The film uses the circle to present the mystery with the Chinese philosophy thoughts. The circle, which has a close relation with Chinese cosmic consciousness and sentiment of life, is an important circle of spirit in traditional Chinese philosophy. And it is the factor that cannot be ignored in revealing the secrets of Chinese art life. The circle, without protruding and defect, has no start and no end. Standing in the center of it, you will have no direction, and the results are the same in every direction. The circle is the same in both sides, and it exists in all things in the world. All these construct the basis of Chinese thinking and observation of the world, from which they gradually form the philosophy thoughts.

The circle also can be seen in many ancient
Chinese cultures in different areas. Below are some cultural relics found in different
Chinese cultural areas. With the help of the circular cultural symbols, the design
of the alien language is made.
The post The Chinese brush painting and philosophy thought in Arrival (film) first appeared on On Film.

The unpresentable
blue movie expresses the unspeakable meaning in Chinese tattoo.

The foreigners all know that Chinese is the most difficult language, not only because it is the only hieroglyphic that is still being used, but also because the meaning of Chinese language is rather quirkish, depending on the context. The context is the language environment, including the language factor and the non- language factor. Factors relating time, space, scene, object, premise of discourse, and other use of words, are all contextual factors. Sometimes, the Chinese applies to express the unspeakable meaning, because of its complex context relations. These are the subtleties of Chinese cultures. But it is hard for foreign films to use it, and there are few. But, Romance is an exception.

As a 1999 French art house drama
film written and directed by Catherine Breillat, Romance stars Caroline Ducey, Rocco Siffredi, Sagamore
Stévenin and François Berléand. It features explicit copulation
scenes, unpresentable maybe. Marie loves with her boyfriend Paul, a model, but
he would like to read books to kill the time rather than have sex with her. She
searches for intimacy beyond the bounds of traditional sexual limitations, a
journey that proves to be both fulfilling and empowering.

The film uses the Chinese Character “忍” tattoo on Paul’s left chest that is
easily overlooked to show the core artistic conception. Those who know the
exactly meaning of the word will praise the detail that is artistically aware.

The
meaning of the Chinese character and the implication in the film.

The Chinese character “忍” means to endure, to bear, to tolerate,
or be cruel in English. When a word goes into translation, all those linguistic subtleties get lost.
But we can still get the basic meaning of the word and understand the heart of
the film.

It is well accepted that the desire for
food and sex is part of human nature. As a normal young woman, Marie is eager
to get sexual love from her boyfriend Paul for a long time, but Paul refuses
her for a long time. Marie has made a lot of effort to coordinate Paul, but
fails. She loves the wrong guy who has no interest for sex. Though Marie has a
strong will to stay in the normal and moral sex relation with Paul, but any man’s
will gets weaker and weaker as the time goes by, and especially in the case
that no hope can be seen. She is despair and gives up all the attempts.
She can’t endure the life without sex.

The most popular among foreigners is the
Chinese characters on their skin.

It is unknown when it begins that the most popular operation among foreigners is the Chinese characters tattoo on the skin, and no one knows what the characters mean. It is seen from a lot of European and American stars who love Chinese characters, like a pilgrimage.

Thirty years ago, if people in the world did
not know English, they would be stuck in a corner and held a hard place. But
thirty years later, if they did not understand Chinese culture and Chinese, you
would be held a hard place. Not to mention how well it’s reflected in the tattoo.

Most foreigners with Chinese characters tattoo are probably looking for a tattoo artist who is of Asian origin and can’t even speak Chinese. They offer a very misleading translation because they are stupid foreigners who don’t understand Chinese.

A Vietnamese tattoo artist has been arrested in
the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo for inscribing Chinese characters on customers

Chinese
mythical animal of remote ages shows up in The Great Wall (film).

China is a country with long long history,
and many mythical animals of remote ages that have been passed down by word of mouth
or documents. There are four Saint Beasts in Chinese myths and legends of the
ancient times, i.e., Taotie, Hundun, Taowu, and Qiongqi. The origin of the four
Saint Beasts are four Immortals, i.e., Sanmiao, Huandou, Gun, and Gonggong, who
who had done all kinds of evil without virtues.
And after the death, the four Immortals were debased from Heaven to Earth, and
then Sanmiao, Huandou, Gun, and Gonggong transformed into Taotie, Hundun,
Taowu, and Qiongqi respectively. To be practical and realistic, the history of
four Saint Beasts in Chinese myth is much richer than the Beasts in King Kong, Godzilla, and Alien series.
The Chinese Beasts always cannot prove their presence and strength to film fans
for lack of stages. The Taotie in The
Great Wall (film) is a good start, which means that the movie road of the
four Chinese Saint Beasts become smooth.

The Great Wall is a 2016 epic historical fiction action-adventure monster film directed by Zhang Yimou. The film stars Matt Damon, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Andy Lau. In ancient China, the man-eating monster, Taotie, will gather together to invade the human territory to eat people every 60 years. Human Legion has to build the Great Wall to resist the invasion of monsters. Because of an accidental opportunity, the Foreign Mercenaries who look for gunpowder accidentally enter the Great Wall where they get to know the shadow troops who are against the Taoties. And together they resist the beasts hand in hand.

As a monster film, The Great Wall constantly emphasizes that Chinese invented gunpowder
and compass. And The Great Wall
makes another contribution that it presents the Chinese traditional Saint
Beasts to the world audiences. The Great
Wall, the ambitious work of Zhang Yimou, shoulders an important mission
to introduce the Chinese cultural landmarks and mythical monsters to the world.
Like that the shadow troops affect outsider Matt Damon with their indomitable
spirits, Zhang Yimou uses his recreation of Chinese culture to influence more
people to concern Chinese native cultures.

What
is the Saint Beast Taotie?

Taotie only has his head and big mouth, and
it eat everything, including its body. Taotie dies from overeating, and it becomes
the symbol of greed. There are several versions of the origin of Saint Beast Taotie.

According to the ancient Chinese work, Shanhaiching, or the Classic of Mountains and Rivers, the Gouwu Mountain was rich of jade, and copper mine underground. There was a Beast on the Mountain that had the goat shape, and human face. Its eyes were under its armpit, and its teeth were like tiger teeth and its paws human hands, and it sounded like human infant. Here the Saint Beast Taotie is shaped as Humanoid beast. Below are two sketches of Taotie, according the description of Shanhaiching.

But somebody believes that Taotie was the
transformation of Chiyou, the mythological warrior engaged in fighting with the
Yellow Emperor who was the ancestor of Han nationality. In the decisive battle,
Chiyou was killed, and he became resentment lingers, and his head was cut and
fell to the ground to become Taotie. It is said that Chiyou looked thin, but
infact greedy, which happened to coincide with Taotie.

In another story, Taotie was the fifth son
of the Dragon. It had the shape of wolf, and was always desperate to eat.
Because Taotie was extremely greedy, people in China call those persons that
are greedy of food and fortune as Taotie persons. And in The Great Wall, Taotie is sent from God to punish the human because
of the insatiably avaricious King Zhou, so human and Taotie are engaged in war
every 60 years, which lasts 2000 years.

But Taotie was not the symbol of greed at
the beginning, and it was once deemed as the mythical animal of deterrent to
the nine regions of ancient China, so its image was engraved on many bronze
wares, especially bronze tripod that was very important for ancient
Chinese. Taotie pattern on the bronze wares dated from
the Liangzhu Culture jade carving, 5000 years ago in the lower reaches of the
Yangtze River. Traditionally, Taotie pattern on the bronze wares
are not only an animal face images design, but also means Sun God.
And the eyes are especially important for Taotie. In The Great Wall, the eyes of Taotie are given importance. Once the
eyes are wounded, Taotie is seriously injured or dies. That may be the reason
why the eyes are under its armpit.
The post The mythical animal Taotie of remote ages in The Great Wall (film) first appeared on On Film.

Youth overview.

Youth is the time of life when one is
young, but the spirit of the heart is more important. Everybody gets old one
day. How do we look upon life with a peaceful and graceful mind when we are old
and we find the conflict between youth and old, desire and fear? Youth
tries to tell a story of getting old and facing the concomitant loneliness, a
story of the eternal struggle between age and youth, the past and the future,
life and death, commitment and betrayal, but not to find the answer. It is a
2015 Italian comedy-drama film written and directed by Paolo
Sorrentino. It is the director’s second English language film. The film
premiered at the 2015 Cannes Film Festival, where it competed for
the Palme d’Or and had a positive critical response.

Stars, Michael Caine and Harvey Keitel as best friends, Fred Ballinger and Mick Boyle, who reflect on their lives while holidaying in the Swiss Alps. The two friends are old, and Fred is a retired composer and conductor, but Mick still works as a film director. Fred’s daughter and Mick’s son are of a couple whose marriage is on the breaking edge. Fred and Mick observe all guests curiously in the hotel, the beautiful Miss Universe, the enthusiastic young writer, the monk, and so on. From the beginning to the end, the film dexterously handles such strong comparison between young and old as the wrinkled and smooth flesh, the energetic and dispirited movement, the slim and fat posture, in the same place, at the same time, but never conflicting. Just in a quiet and luxury hotel, far from noisy cities, everything happens reasonably.

Stars
skillfully use chopsticks for Chinese food.

There is a meal in the film, Chinese food.
All stars, Michael Caine, Harvey Keitel, Rachel Weisz, and other actors and
actress, skillfully use chopsticks for Chinese food. That is amazing. For most
westerners, they seldom have the chance to use chopsticks at home or outside,
so they can’t practice the skills. There is a saying that diligence redeems
stupidity, but an almost useless skill is really not worth practicing. And, there’s
rarely anyone who’ll take the time to teach them the correct form or motions.
Even for Chinese people, they have to exercise for years from the childhood to master
the profound skill.

The meal may be a breakfast. The film doesn’t
mean to show what they eat, but show the atmosphere and mood, so it can’t tell
what the foods are. But from the glimpse of the picture, some exquisite Chinese
snacks are shown. Chinese snacks are of very important part of Chinese food.
They may be made from flour, rice, meat, vegetables, and other unnamed eatable
things to strengthen the flavor, which increases people’s appetite considerably.
It is very pleasant for talking, and story goes smoothly to reveal the plot.

Western
fare and Chinese food, a comparison of young and old?

The film brightly makes things of sharp
contrast together to highlight the theme of the story, and something is dealt
with metaphors, maybe. Take the Chinese food for an example. Located at the foot
of the Alps Mountain, in Eastern Switzerland, the Waldhaus Flims hotel
is the main location for the film, where is a splendid place for vocation. I
have checked the hotel menu, and find that no Chinese food is served. Of
course, further on-the-spot investigation might be required to confirm that.
And the film directors rack their brains to arrange a Chinese meal, and why?

Well, the knife and fork for west meals has
a short history. In the early stage, people just used a knife which was not
exactly tableware but multifunctional. It was used to kill, anatomize or cut
the prey. When the prey was cooked, the knife was used to eat meat. Until 15th
century, because the knife was sometimes dangerous to take the meat into the
mouth, the fork was invented to replace the knife to take food into the mouth.
From then on, the knife and fork formed a dinner service. Until 17th century,
England upper class began to use three-point fork, and modern four-point
fork was used until 18th century.

The Chinese chopsticks have been in use for
thousands of years. According to recorded history, the chopsticks history can
be traced back to the11th century B.C., when the King used the ivory chopsticks
which was first documented. The Chinese chopsticks which simply contain two
small slender sticks are based on the lever principle. They can be made of
bamboo, wood, plastic or metal, or luxury ivory, gold and silver.

In the film, the short-history knife and
fork and the long-history chopsticks are just like a young man and an old man,
just like the youth and the old. In one way, the comparison is part of the artistic
conception in the film. The knife and fork and chopsticks have their path and experience,
but along the way they meet somewhere to look up each other. They have
different ways of doing things, where the conflict arises, and it’s part of
life. On the other hand, the knife and fork and chopsticks were used in the
past, are being used now, and will be used in the future. Just like that the
conflict and comparison of the young and the old is always there. They exist,
and they must be reasonable, but we have to look through the conflict and
comparison to look into the future.
The post Stars skillfully use chopsticks for Chinese food in Youth first appeared on On Film.

The Prometheus
goes to the space for human origin.

Who are our ancestors? Who is the first to
walk on earth? Who are their nearest relatives? Why do they survive while
others tend to die? Human never stop exploring the human origin. Since Darwin
created biological evolution theory, most people believe that human is the
product of biological evolution, and modern people and modern apes had a common
ancestor. Even so, people keep studying every trace that points to the origin
of human.

The film Prometheus begins with the search of human origin, but it turns to be an Alien film. The Alien film series is very popular all over the world, which was started in 1979. The terrible procedure of the Alien growth that it is oviparous but finally grows up to a powerful monster after parasiting in the human body is very impressive as a typical screen image. But the past Alien film series never tell the cause where the Alien comes from. Prometheus is a 2012 science fiction film directed by Ridley Scott, written by Jon Spaihts and Damon Lindelof, and starring Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, and Charlize Theron. It is set in the late 21st century when the crew members of the spaceship Prometheusas that follows a star map discovered among the artifacts of several ancient Earth cultures find the Creator’s planet. In the underground cave which turns out to be a spaceship, with the help of the robot named David, the crew members find the Creator’s remains, and the Creator’s DNA matches human’s. And the crew finds a survival of the Creator, but the Creator is to destroy human with the biological weapon that is stored in the spaceship. At the moment when the Creator launches the spaceship towards Earth, the crew crashes up to the spaceship. The Creator vents his anger on Doctor Shaw who is one of the initiators to begin the trip to the Creator’s planet. In the fight, the mutated biological weapon kills and parasites the Creator, and the first Alien is born.

The
beautiful Doctor Shaw eats Chinese food after exploration.

After the first exploration from the
Creator’s ship, Doctor Shaw finds that the Creator’s DNA matches human’s, which
really makes her excited. When the DNA matching experiment is done, she picks
up chopsticks to eat Chinese food, recording the important discovery with the recorder.
And Doctor Shaw’ husband comes in with a fresh rose. American always find
romance everywhere. In the two-year-long journey in the space, how could people
get a fresh rose for flirting? Maybe we are interesting with the question, and
the husband gives the answer. He says the rose is frozen with the champagne,
and when they find what they came for, he will pick out to give to the wife. But
Doctor Shaw’ husband is more interested in lovemaking with Doctor Shaw. The
Chinese food, or the rose, is just a snack before sex. But this is the very intercourse
that gives birth to the Alien. Well, audients cannot help wondering that the
Alien would not be born if Doctor Shaw doesn’t have the spirit for the
intercourse without the Chinese food. So, why do they carry the Chinese food
with them?

The film does not show the detail of the
Chinese food, and we just can barely catch a glimpse of the food between the chopsticks.
They look green, like some kind of vegetables. Considering the two yeas long
journey in the space, only the robot David drives the ship, and others are asleep,
so the vegetables are not fresh, and they must be preserved food.

The
reason people carry Chinese food with them in the space.

The film deliberately shows the chopsticks twice
in the narration. The first time is when the crew are woken up by the robot
David to have their first meal, and the second is when Doctor Shaw eats Chinese
food and then make love with her husband. I don’t know why, as it is not necessary
in the space. The chopsticks are easy and portable to carry, but the Chinese
food is difficult to preserve. Maybe they just carry chopsticks with them,
because the film never shows the Chinese food. But if there is not Chinese
food, what they carry chopsticks for? For eating steak?

The first reason maybe is that there is one
American Chinese on the ship. American always advocates democracy and love, and
the same spirit is expressed in the film with the specific particulars.
Everyone who sees the film would be deeply moved that the crew is so thoughtful
to prepare for everybody, and feels that everybody is equally respected, and
feels love. Analysts say that American films successfully implement American
values and humanistic concern, and that is how they achieve the goal in every
tiny thing.

The second reason maybe is the same as the
rose, for it is just a stage property to make the film more comfortable. After
the landing on the planet, the crew members wear the space suit to go out.
Doctor Shaw’ husband asks robot David why David wear the space suit because he
doesn’t need breathing. David says that people feel more comfortable to
interact with their own kind, so he is designed to do that. It is the same
reason that people feel more comfortable to live in their own environment under
which they can complete the mission better, including the food and the way they
eat the food. Just like the rose before the sex makes the sex more exciting.
The post They travel in space with Chinese food in the Prometheus first appeared on On Film.

Nicolas
Cage uses Chinese Wing Chun to train and kill.

The killer theme has been put on screen for
dozens of years. It is easy to make the killing processes and scenes good, but
difficult to make the difference. Unfortunately, Bangkok Dangerous makes no difference from other killer films. The
Hollywood leading man, the Bangkok story place, it is really not stimulating,
except the other Asian actors, because you know the end when you know the
beginning. Our killer, Nicolas Cage, starts in the so cool voice-over, a little
lonely, and with the cold and indifferent look. The film is meant to shoot a
man in the night, so whole film is almost shot in the Bangkok night, but it is
never thought that the killer dies silently in Bangkok, without value.

Bangkok
Dangerous is a 2008 crime thriller film
written and directed by the Pang Brothers, and starring Nicolas Cage.
Killer Joe (by Nicolas Cage) is a quiet man, he disappears quietly somewhere in
the world after he finishes the job. This time, he goes to Thailand in the name
of vocation to launch the new job. In Bangkok, he meets a deaf-mute girl, Fon.
He fabricates new identity to get close to Fon. In order to reduce his chances
of exposure, Joe chooses Kong as his assistant, a corner boy, to do
some dangerous liaison work. Joe finds Kong smart and capable, and he
accepts Kong as his student and friend. Because of his beloved Fon, it is a
violation of the regulations for Joe to abandon the assassination, which
greatly infuriates the buyers. The buyers begin to insanely assault Joe. Joe
fights back the gangsters, for his new life, lover and friend.

After all, Nicolas Cage is good actor, not handsome, but sexy. He treats actor’s lines well. When watching such an unpopular film, most people don’t know Thai language, and the leading lady is deaf and mute, so the Nicolas Cage actor’s lines is very important. Especially his voice-over sounds very aesthetic. He will add his creativity to the role in the film. He is the kind of charismatic actor who handles and grasps the role appropriately.

But, his hairstyle is a real failure in the
film, because the hair scatters scruffy. I don’t know why the girl would fall
in love with such an old sloppy bald-headed man.

Nicolas
Cage teaches Kong Wing Chun.

In the film, Nicolas Cage teaches Kong Wing
Chun, which is commendable melee action scene. It is said that Steven Seagal
and Robert Downey Jr. all studied Wing Chun. Now, it is found that Nicolas Cage
studied Wing Chun, too. There are two plots.

One is the dagger lesson. In the beginning,
Kong asks Nicolas Cage to teach him to fight, but Nicolas Cage takes up a
dagger to try to kill Kong who knows too much. Kong is so agile to block Nicolas
Cage’s hand when the dagger is next to his neck. After several trials, Nicolas
Cage finds him a man of great potential, and accepts him as student. The other
lesson is the chi sau training, a way of dual practice of Wing Chun. But here
we know that Nicolas Cage is not familiar with the Wing Chun
theory. The Wing Chun theory is to withdraw the chest, erect the back, loose
the shoulders down, and punch out in the middle line of the body. But Nicolas
Cage raises his shoulders, and punch out in the side line of the body.

The
Chinese Wing Chun.

Wing Chun, a traditional Chinese martial
art, belongs to the southern China school of fist martial art and is based on
the “Central Line of Human Body” theory. With its focus on defense, Wing Chun
develops an active and concise system of defense and the proper use of force in
necessary circumstance. The basic Empty hand forms of Wing Chun are Siu Lim
Tao, chum kiu and Bil Gee, and major practice method is chi sau, a way of dual
practice, and the main instrument used include man-shaped wood stool, sword and
sticks, and auxiliary equipment include sandbags on walls, and three-star
stools. It advocates the flexible movement of four limbs under the guidance of
right concept and mindset.

The true origin of Wing Chun remains mystery
now and is highly disputed. The history of Wing Chun is not seen in written
documents, but passed on orally among people as folk-legends. It is widely
believed that it originated in border areas in Sichuan and Yunnan Province,
then gained prevalence in Fujian Province and eventually established itself as
a prominent school of martial arts in Foshan, Guangdong Province.

It is explicit that Yip Man learned Wing
Chun from Chan
Wah Shun who was an accountant in an old-time Chinese private bank. As Chan Wah
Shun charged a high fee, the art of Wing Chun did not reach out wide then. Yip
Man showed prodigious ability for martial arts but was poor in physical health.
In the hope of boosting his health, Yip Man was allowed to be one of Mr. Chan’s
followers. Yip Man was both talented and diligent, so he was favored and
instructed by Chan in person more often. And Chan Wah Shun asked his elder
disciple Wu Zhongsu to practice with Yip Man a lot, further improved Yip Man’s
skills.

After Chan Wah Shun died from stroke, Yip
Man followed Wu Zhongsu and practiced hard for three years before he was even
15. After that, Yip Man went to St. Stephen’s College in Hong Kong as demanded
by his father. And during his college time, he was able to meet Leung Bik, the Wing
Chun master, with whom he practiced Wing Chun together. In 1949, Yip Man left
Foshan for Hong Kong to teach Wing Chun art to make a living for the following
20 years.

There are many renowned disciples of Yip
Man, in particular Bruce Lee who enjoyed worldwide reputation for being a
master of Chinese martial arts and a movie start. Bruce Lee learned Wing Chun from
Yip Man since he was young, and then left to study in the United States when he
was 18. After his graduation, he founded the Jun Fan Gung Fu Instituteto pass
on Chinese martial arts. During this time, he conducted in-depth study, drew on
the strength of both Chinese and foreign martial arts, and eventually
established his own martial art sect, Jeet Kune Do. In 1971, he returned to
Hong Kong and started staring in films, and many of his films about Chinese
Kung Fu were huge successes, earning the title of “King of Kung Fu” for himself
and made Wing Chun world renown which he learned in his early days.

Nowadays, Wing Chun becomes the most
famous Chinese martial arts in the West. In some countries, Wing Chun is the
standard martial art for police and military forces. Though karate, Taekwondo, Brazil
Jiu Jitsu are very popular with the Western Folk, there are many fanatical Wing
Chun practitioners. With its rapid, efficient and practical style, Wing Chun
greatly influences the world fight ring.
The post Nicolas Cage teaches Chinese Wing Chun in Bangkok Dangerous first appeared on On Film.

Pride
and Prejudice and Zombies is a 2016
British-American action horror comedy film based
on Seth Grahame-Smith’s 2009 novel, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies,
which parodies the 1813 novel Pride and Prejudice by Jane
Austen. The film is directed by Burr Steers, who wrote the adapted
screenplay.

In 19 century, England, a mysterious plague breaks out, and the undead wander around and damage the countryside. Even the noble ladies are sent to China or Japan to learn the art of weaponry and martial arts. In a ball thrown by the rich Bingley family, Elizabeth Bennet meets Fitzwilliam Darcy, but they get into Pride and Prejudice against each other, for kinds of reasons. In a plague, many people are infected and become Zombies. Competitive Elizabeth Bennet decides to save the home land and annihilate the Zombies with her exquisite martial arts and excellent swordsmanship. In the tough fights, she and Fitzwilliam Darcy put aside personal and social prejudices, and put aside Pride and Prejudice, and fight together. They finally become the true love of each other.

The Chinese
Shaolin Temple Martial arts and The Art of War.

In the film, Elizabeth Bennet says that she
learned Shaolin martial arts in Shaolin Temple, Henan Province, China. The film
is set in 1700~1800 when it as Qing Dynasty in China, under the rule
of Qianlong Emperor, and China and England established trade relationship that
time. And it was possible to go to China to learn Shaolin martial arts.

But the fact is that during the Qing
Dynasty, China was an isolated country. The foreigners were not allowed to go
around themselves. Although doing business with China for years, the British
just went to one city, i.e. Guangzhou. And in Guangzhou, they just went to one
place, i.e. the Thirteen Hongs. And they were only allowed to stay in the
Street of Thirteen Hongs, and they could not go outside without permission. Because
the Chinese government scorned to make contact with the British directly,
the he Thirteen Hongs, the thirteen government-appointed Chinese traders,
played the role of brokers. They were only allowed to come in summer, without
wife or children together. All of the actions of the British were under the monitoring
and constraints from the Thirteen Hongs, just like prisoners. So, Elizabeth
Bennet would never be able to go to Shaolin Temple, because of the supervision
of the Thirteen Hongs.

Further More, Shaolin Temple would not recruit
female students that time. The members in the Shaolin Temple were mainly monks
and male laity students. The female were even not allowed to go inside the door,
as its institution stipulated. And, in the movie, when fighting with the Zombies,
Elizabeth Bennet’s martial arts are not Shaolin style at all.

Elizabeth Bennet says that she knows The
Art of War, an ancient Chinese military treatise, dating from the 5th
century BC. Attributed to the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun
Tzu (“Master Sun”, also spelled Sunzi), the text is composed of
13 chapters, each of which is devoted to one aspect of warfare. It is
commonly thought of as a definitive work on military strategy and tactics.
It was placed at the head of China’s Seven Military Classics upon the
collection’s creation in 1080 by Emperor Shenzong of Song, and has long
been the most influential strategy text in East Asia. It has had an
influence on Eastern and Western military thinking, business tactics, legal
strategy and beyond.

The book was first translated into French
in 1772 by the Jesuit Jean Joseph Marie Amiot and a partial
translation into English was attempted by British officer Everard Ferguson
Calthrop in 1905. The first annotated English translation was completed and
published by Lionel Giles in 1910. Leaders such as Mao Zedong,
General Vo Nguyen Giap, General Douglas MacArthur and leaders
of Imperial Japan have drawn inspiration from the work.

So, Elizabeth Bennet will never live up to 1910
to read the English translation version of The Art of War. Of course, Elizabeth
Bennet will say that she knows the original works in Chinese. Ha-ha, forget it.
The post The girls study Chinese Shaolin Temple Martial arts in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies first appeared on On Film.
