The 1593 peace agreement was made by the envoys of China and Japan, but in order to get agreement quickly and nicely, the envoys made some provisions unreasonable for both parties, which made Chinese Emperor and Toyotomi Hideyoshi were very furious. In January 1597, Japanese army of 140,000 land forces and 10,000 navy forces attacked Korea again to ask for more. And that was the background for Battle of Myeongnyang commanded by Yi Sun-sin. Of course, Korean army was utterly routed as in the past, and it mainly relied on Chinese army to attack Japanese army. Though Battle of Myeongnyang blocked the Japanese navy attack, the Japanese navy main forces were completely destroyed by Chinese navy forces in Battle of Noryang in 1598.

The series of war laid the structure of the Northeast Asia for the coming 300 years, and had important influences on China, Korea and Japan.

In order to fight Japan, China spent 7 years and lots of money and lots of soldiers fighting in Korea, which made the country weak. And, what was worse was that to reinforce the combat personnel, the Ming dynasty had to arm and train the Manchu soldiers who later destroyed Ming Dynasty.

As for Japan, Toyotomi Hideyoshi died for the loss of the war, and Leyasu Tokugawa unified Japan. Leyasu Tokugawa cut off Japan from the outside world for almost 300years, because Japan knew that they couldn’t afford to engage another war with China again.

The Korean dynasty was reserved after the war, and continued to attach itself to China. And Korea got a famous national hero Yi Sun-sin to commemorate for the nation. 300 years later, Korea was completely occupied by Japan.

There are many killer films, but no one is like Killer Joe. In many cases, killer films mainly described the cool killer who killed the enemies in cold blood, got things done in minutes, and showed their dazzling skills to Kill and rob. Killer Joe is a killer film combined with family tragedy and ethics that make the film different. In the film, a young man in trouble, a ramshackle father, a retarded sister, an unmerciful stepmother, and a feminine and handsome killer, become the protagonists of the story. The open story is that the son in trouble incites his father to employ a killer to kill his mother to get her insurance money, but the story behind is really worth scrutiny. There are two plots that associate the girl Dottie with Chinese martial arts.

The first is that the brother, Chris, meets his naked sister Dottie in his dream. Dottie plays with a lizard, and then comes to his room. Suddenly, Dottie takes off her pajamas and stare at him. Then Dottie poses a Wing Chun posture and disappears.

The second is that Dottie studies Chinese martial arts from TV. After talking, Chris and his father decide to kill his mother, and they invite the killer Joe to come for the negotiation at home. When Joe comes, he knocks at the door, but on one answer. Joe opens the door himself and finds that Dottie is at home by herself, and she is studying at home the Chinese martial arts from the Chinese motion film in TV. She studies seriously, and every gesture and motion are full of joy.

The Chinese martial arts are to underline the poor girl.

People would feel so bad and uncomfortable for Dottie’s story. Dottie is only 12 years old, abandoned by her mother, and lives with her brother and father in an abnormal family. She seldom goes out, as if she is in house arrest. From the film we know that Dottie is mentally abnormal. The brother Chris has an illicit relationship with his sister Dottie, and makes her pregnant. When Chris and their father hire killer Joe to kill the mother, Dottie is appointed as retainer by Joe and becomes his sex dolls. In the end, desperate Dottie shoots her brother, father, and Joe. So to speak, this handicapped girl experiences several terrible things that most people would never experience even one.

First, the Chinese martial arts plots are to underline the poor girl’s situation. We all know that film art comes from life, but above life. That is why art is called art. The desire, aspirations, and vision that cannot be completed in real life can be met through the film art forms. That’s the movie charm. But we all know that stories in film are not true, and something like Chinese martial arts in the film are not true, either. The Chinese martial arts after artistic adaption are for motion shows, and enrich the delight to watch the film, which is fit for both Chinese and other kinds of martial arts in the film. It is a basic common sense that you cannot learn martial arts from the film or TV. The film implies the girl’s tragedy with the learning martial arts from the film plot.

Second, the Chinese martial arts are the careful selection for the film, and it is determined by the practice feature of Chinese martial arts. There is a unique practice phase of non-confrontation single-man exercise called routine exercise in Chinese martial arts practice. People will practice in the fixed motion mode that was set as regular mode by former master. The routine exercise sums up and hints the smart forms to attack and defense. But the forms must be told, and then you know how to use it. I think the routine exercise gives the film people the inspiration, because when people practice routine exercise alone, waving their hands, kicking their legs, it looks like idiot in unknowing people’s eyes, just like the girl studies martial arts alone in front of the TV.

But, does it say that Chinese martial arts are fit for abnormal people in the film? I don’t know. It is just a speculation.

In the Chinese cobra meat and cobra wine restaurant plot in Keeping up with the Joneses, when Jonathan Hamm wants some information about MBI company from Zach Galifianakis, he takes Zach Galifianakis to a Chinese cobra meat and cobra wine restaurant. The restaurant is a secret business, but of course Jonathan Hamm is the regular client of the restaurant. He and the Chinese restaurant couple greet each other, and he enters the secret cobra wine bar of the Chinese restaurant with Zach Galifianakis.

In the cobra wine bar, Zach Galifianakis tells Jonathan Hamm that he can’t eat spicy food, but the Chinese owner shows a bottle of cobra wine that is made by soaking the cobra in the white spirit. But I suggest that the film maker should really think of the specifics of the bottle of cobra wine—-how could they foist the big cobra into the small bottle? Anyway, it is a made cobra wine. And the Chinese owner tells Zach Galifianakis that in Guangdong Province, China, cobra wine is considered as a particularly powerful aphrodisiac. Zach Galifianakis and Jonathan Hamm enjoy the great cobra meat and cobra wine feast. And the film particularly gives the close-up of the cobra head that gives Zach Galifianakis a bite. That is really painful. But the restaurant is more than sufficient to deal with that, and Zach Galifianakis is given antitoxic serum and Jonathan Hamm is given the information.

The plot is really odd, as if in America it is free to open a cobra meat and cobra wine restaurant.

The real Chinese notion upon cobra.

Cobras, or snakes, in China, are considered as spiritual animals and given the most powerful spirituality and mana. People always keep a respectful distance from cobras. In Taoism (the native Chinese religion) classical works, it says that God will never forgive those people who kill snakes for no reasons. If you kill a snake for no reasons, you will get retribution you deserve. If you save a snake, you will get unexpected return. Different from the Western Aesop’s Fables story < Snake and farmer>, this is quite another piece of cake.

There is a story about people killing snakes by mistake. In 1980s, someone built the foundation to construct a house. And a nest of snakes was found under the ground. For fear and shock, he asked the workers to kill the snakes, and only one white snake escaped. A month later, his only daughter got dementia suddenly. And she transformed into human figure to marry him.

 Of course, in Chinese traditional medicine, really there are some treatments of using cobra wine to treat diseases, like rheumatic arthritis, limb numbness, epilepsy, and so on, and are proved by modern medical science. But under this circumstance, people kill snakes for medical treatment purpose, not for no reasons. And most snakes and cobras used for medical treatment are captive, not wild snakes, just like cattle in captivity for meat.

As for snakes captured for meat, as mentioned above, most of them are captive, especially for meat. If you understand the purpose of raising cows for meat and milk, why don’t you understand the purpose of raising snakes for meat and therapy?

So, the film is unnecessary to discredit China and Chinese for their mistreatment upon animals, but do enough homework first. Besides, a CIA agent becomes the regular client of the restaurant, and most of the customers are Westerners, and how could he ignore such illegal thing that happens in the nation of law, America?

Every nation in the world has their own unique clothes & accessories that was long time evolved with the culture, environment and history. These clothes & accessories have different meaning as the time changes. Take Chinese chi-pao, or Cheongsam, for example. Chi-pao is the Chinese traditional costume, hailed as the quintessence of Chinese culture. Though there are still a lot of controversies about the definition and origin time, chi-pao is still one of the most gorgeous phenomena and forms in China’s long dress culture.

Maybe there many films show the image of Chinese females in chi-pao, but there are few films show the image of white females in chi-pao. Kill Bill: Volume 1 is one seen up to present. Kill Bill: Volume 1 (or simply Kill Bill), a 2003 American martial arts film written and directed by Quentin Tarantino, stars Uma Thurman Lucy Liu, Michael Madsen, Daryl Hannah and Vivica A. Fox and David Carradine. The film tells the story of revenge. After the killers try to kill her and her unborn child, the leading lady begins her revenge. Her journey takes her to Japan, where she battles the Tokyo yakuza.

The Crusades was a famous religious movement in history. That may be the most dramatic and sad love story that the soldier travels so fast to meet and love the princess, then parts alone. The film gives an implicit background that it happens in China.

From the history truth, we can find some stupid mistakes the film makes.

First, the Crusades soldier would never travel so far. According to history, the Crusades broke out during 1096 to 1291, during which was the Song Dynasty in China, or the Northern Song Dynasty (960-1127) and the Southern Song Dynasty (1127-1279). Unlike the Han dynasty (202 – 220B.C.) or the Tang dynasty (618—907), the Song Dynasty the territory was relatively smaller. And the neighbouring countries were bellicose and tough, and war broke out everywhere. On one hand, the Crusades went as far as within Europe. On the other hand, the Song Dynasty didn’t directly adjoin the Central Asia, not to say the West Asia. It made it hard to go to China from the West through land way. What about the seaway? That was impossible for the Westerners because of their poor navigation technology and shipbuilding level.

We don’t know exactly when the Crusades soldier goes to China in the film. Even he comes in Southern Song Dynasty that has the relatively bigger territory, and he never has the chance to arrive in China. Look at the territory map of Southern Song Dynasty below. The coastal green part was the Southern Song Dynasty territory.

Second, the Jinyang City once existed, but it couldn’t wait until the Crusades soldier arrival. The Jinyang City was located in nowadays Taiyuan City, Shanxi Province, China. At the beginning of Song Dynasty, Jinyang City was not under the reign of Song Dynasty, but Song Dynasty always wanted to take it into its own territory. In 979, the second emperor, Emperor Taizong, led his army to conquer Jinyang City. The rampart was tall and tough, and the enemy was skillful, which made the Song army suffer heavy casualties. After the occupancy of Jinyang City, Emperor Taizong decided to destroy the city and the rampart completely. For one hand, he vented his resentment, and for the other hand he thought that such a city easy to hold but hard to attack would give the chance for other persons to claim Emperor in the city. So, the city vanished in 979. The citizens migrated to other cities under the Emperor order. In the film, the Crusades soldier has to go back to 979 through time travel to meet the Chinese princess in Jinyang City. The map below shows the City gate of Jinyang City in the film.

Third, the desert appears in the wrong place. In the film, the Crusades soldier and the Chinese princess go into Jinyang City after the long escaping journey in the desert. But check the territory map of Southern Song Dynasty, you will find that Jinyang City was located in the area far from desert. The red circle shows the location of Jinyang City. It was a temperate continental climate, hot and rainy in summer, cold and dry in winter, and it would never become desert.

Fourth, the Western caravan appears in the wrong place. In order to cope with the previous and following plot about the desert journey, the Western caravan is present in the desert to give the Crusades soldier and the Chinese princess the chance to go into Jinyang City. But as mentioned before that the Song Dynasty territory was far from the West, the road is blocked. The Song Dynasty territory was surrounded by several bellicose and tough neighbouring countries. No one would take the chance of being robbed to go to China for the trade.
