Whose
Independence Day is this?

An Independence Day is
an anniversary of a nation’s independence or statehood.
Most countries observe their respective independence days as national
holidays. The Independence Day of the United State, the most famous Independence
Day maybe, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of
the Declaration of Independence 240 years ago in 1776 on July 4
by the Continental. It declared that the thirteen American
colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of
America, and were no longer part of the British Empire.

The Independence Day of the United State is
also moved onto the screen. Independence
Day: Resurgence, the sequel to the 1996 film Independence Day,is a 2016 American science
fiction adventure film directed by Roland Emmerich. It tells the
story that 20 years after that time in the 1996 film Independence Day, the
returning aliens again attack Earth with an advanced and unprecedented force
during the twentieth anniversary of humanity’s victory against them
on July 4. A group of young men steps forward bravely to fights
for human future, and again the aliens are beaten.

Here the Independence Day of the United State becomes the Independence Day of the earth, because 20 years ago the day of July 4 was set to be the humanity’s victory day against the aliens. Since then, the United Nations have collaborated on the Earth Space Defense (ESD), an international military defense and research organization, and developed hybrid technology reverse-engineered from the invaders’ in anticipation that they would return.

Roland
Emmerich wants more to make Chinese money than to make the film.

One of the defense bases is the moon space
controlled by Chinese. And the Chinese commander, Jiang Lao, is sedulously described
as a man lack of consideration for the whole and complete
situation, but only to blindly blame others. In the beginning, the pilot disobeys
the Chinese commander to save the faulty equipment with his ship, and he come
into the base with the look of what you can do about it when criticized by the commander.
The intolerant commander and the tolerant American pilot make sharp contrast.

Since it is a Chinese moon space, Chinese
must be the official language. But only the beginning has some opening remarks in
Chinese, and then everything is in English. It is understood that after all it
is an American film.

Many Chinese products appear in the film.
The milk from China Mengniu Dairy Company Limited is too delicious, so two guys
scramble for it before they go to the fight.

And they use QQ software from Tencent Company
for instant messaging. When the network is down, a close-up image of a baby penguin that
is the logo of Tencent Company is specially shown.

This stacking of Chinese
elements and products, somehow, makes the film the most evident Chinese theme
in history. Every appearance of Chinese elements and products makes Chinese
audiences laugh. Some people say the pilot beat the aliens after drinking
Chinese milk, no matter how smart the aliens are.

“In fact, they are very interesting implantations
in the film. It is very natural to have Chinese product there, because it is a
Chinese moon space,” said Roland Emmerich. Truly it is. And it is the best
explain for the implantations. But Roland Emmerich insisted that it was an
expensive film, that is to say the film has many Chinese sponsors.

A beautiful Chinese girl, Angelababy, plays
as Rain Lao, a Chinese pilot and lieutenant in ESD and the niece of ESD Moon
Base commander Jiang Lao. Chinese girl is often seen in Hollywood films today,
but under most circumstances, the Chinese actresses are just for eye candy.
But, in the film, Rain, strong and brave, launches a counterattack against the
aliens with her allies, which is really refreshing. In the fight, she is boldness
and strong, and make the final efforts to protect the earth. The American pilot
falls in love with her during the daily engagement. This is the typical
American white man and Chinese woman love story.

Anyway, super director Roland Emmerich abruptly
makes the American theme film into a Chinese theme film to tell the world that even
though there are not aliens, the earth situation has changed, because the
Chinese market is the big box office. You want to make Chinese money? Just use
the Chinese elements and feelings.

But many Chinese opinion leaders
suggest that the whole film expresses just one thing, i.e., the American
confidence. The Aliens contact Americans first when they arrive on earth. The
Americans act as vanguard. To some extent, the Americans think they have the
ability to connect the world and win the final victory; thereby they can lead
and unite the world including China, though the base is destroyed again and
again. The film embodies the tolerance of the United States by showing every
battle led by Americans. Roland Emmerich never expected the striking contrast
of Chinese taking a place in the film and the audiences’ remarks, which is just
the opposite to what Roland Emmerich wished.

Roland
Emmerich not only ruins the film, but also ruins the Independence Day.

The film is under kinds of criticism, but
mostly negative. 20 years could make an artist successful, but it also ruins a
director. The film tells almost the old story that the aliens come, and the
earth fights back, even the method to beat the aliens is the same as 20 years
ago to carry a nuclear bomb to go inside the alien mother ship in a kamikaze
suicide way. Roland Emmerich makes no progress in 20 years. In the plots
arrangement, it seems that he wants to inosculate love, fiction, sadness and despair
as a whole in just 2hours. And, the film has no central character, and the
scene for every people is nearly the same.

No matter how hard Roland Emmerich tried, Independence Day: Resurgence is the bad
sequel of the first. In the new century, the film industry is pushed forward by
the progress of science and technology, especially the computer and information
technology. The image design and visual effect of characters has been greatly
improved, compared with the past. And the film making has constantly improved
to catch people’s eyes. Nowadays, it is hard to make audiences to applaud for a
film with special effects, powerful monsters, and heartquake actions, as for
many years they have been in the infiltration of American films with all the pomp and circumstances.

Independence
Day: Resurgence can never reproduce the success of 1996
film Independence Day. Roland Emmerich only wanted to make money by hook
with the in the name of Independence Day. But, no one will pay for the third.
The post A beautiful Chinese girl fights for human future in Independence Day: Resurgence first appeared on On Film.

Wolf Warriors is the first Chinese 3D war action film in China. It was released on April 2, 2015. It is the first film directed by Wu Jing. Wu Jing also plays Sergeant Leng Feng, a marksman within the Chinese Special Forces who is initially tried in court martial and reprimanded for failing to obey a direct order in the field. Scott Adkins plays “Tom Cat”, an ex-US Navy Seal and now mercenary. Min Deng is an international broker, and his brother, Wu Ji, smuggles drugs in China and is killed by Leng Feng. Min Deng, shocked by the death of his brother, hires Tom Cat team to kill Leng Feng. The final fight is between Leng Feng and Tom Cat. Leng Feng succeeds in killing Tom Cat, and Min Deng is arrested. It is also the first film that Scott Adkins cooperates with Chinese director.

The film tries to show Chinese manliness.
But there’re three plots that gives a big discount on the effects. The first is
that the Chinese Wolf Warriors Special Forces with the advantage of numbers
are somehow severely hit by the mercenary army in the woods. In the Hollywood
film, it is an easy piece of cake for one man to fight 100 bastards. The
second, Leng Feng is almost killed by Tom Cat in the final fight. Tom Cat
already puts the knife on Leng Feng’s neck to cut the last breath off, but Leng
Feng strikes back in an unexpected way and kills careless Tom Cat. The
audiences might think that an unequal contest brings no honor to the victor. In
the Hollywood film, the hero will proudly cut the enemy’s heads down, never so awkwardly.
The third, when the Chinese Wolf Warriors Special Forces chase Min Deng to the border
line, a large group of militants flee under the watchful eyes of the Special
Forces armed with automatic weapons and armed helicopter. That’s unreadable. In
the American movie, the militants will be completely wiped out with flying bullets.
Anyway, it is one of the few films to show the Chinese power and manhood
in recent years.

The
beautiful Chinese girl serving in the army.

The head of the Chinese Wolf Warriors
Special Forces is Long Xiaoyun, a beautiful Chinese girl, played by Yu Nan. In
an army mainly composed of males, Long Xiaoyun is distrusted of her ability of
leading the team in the beginning, and even the members of the Special Forces show
disrespect. Undoubtedly, Long Xiaoyun overcomes many difficulties to be a
competent team leader. When Leng Feng disobeys orders to kill drug dealer Wu
Ji, and is about to be fired, Long Xiaoyun knows he is a good sniper, and holds
her ground to recruit Leng Feng into her team.Long Xiaoyun is a people-reading
leader, and she knows no man is perfect. She encourages her men to do their
best but ignore their small flaws.

But, as a dignified military team leader, Yu
Nan cannot act too female to be the leader, and her part relies more on eyes
and face. The film does not give her much space, because she is just the role
to join the plots together and push the story forward. She exists just for the story
structure, not for the story content. It is good enough to be dedicated, and Yu
Nan is doing the good job. The film successfully characterizes the Chinese girl
as an elegant, intellectual, capable and experienced female military officer.

Compared to it that about 15% of US army
are female, in the People’s Liberation Army, female members are still the
minority. Especially in the combat troops, females are very few. The female
members of the PLA mainly are non- combat personnel, such as communication
soldiers, medical corps, orderlies, and so on. The reason is that American army
weapons are more advanced and there is less chance of contact fighting, but in
the PLA, the probability of contact fighting is much higher and females are
limited. But military experts believe that the strength of female upper limbs
is 60% of male upper limbs,
and 70% of male legs, 80% of male reaction rate, and the logistic supply will increase 30%. Female
and male soldiers might get in danger because female soldiers cannot catch up
with male soldiers, so male and female mixed troops operate with low efficiency,
because of which there are less female soldiers in the PLA than American.
The post The beautiful Chinese girl serving in the army in Wolf Warriors first appeared on On Film.

Vicky
the Viking film summary.

Vicky the Viking is a 2009 live action comedy based on the book Vicke Viking and adaptation of the animated series called “Vicky the Viking“, premiered
on September 9, 2009, in Munich, German. Vicky is
the son of Halvar, chief of the Viking village of Flake, a strong and big
warrior who measures people through muscles and strength. Vicky, small but
smart, always proves his father that a man cannot only judged by muscles.

One day the village of Flake is under attack, and all the
children except for Vicky himself are kidnapped. Vicky, together with his
father Halvar and the other Vikings decide to rescue them. The kidnappers turn
out to be Sven the Terrible and his band of Viking pirates, who are hunting for
a legendary treasure, and in order to gain it, they need the assistance of a
child who has never spoken a lie in his or her life. Whilst in pursuit, the
Flake Vikings pick up a young Chinese girl, and together they succeed in
rescuing the children.

The Chinese
girl.

The Chinese girl called Lifu, is very beautiful, a member of the Chinese National Circus, whose ship is attacked by the band of Viking pirates. Lifu gets lost on the sea, trapped in an old box, and picked up by the Flake people. When Lifu appears from the box, she blurts out a pile of sentences in Cantonese, a local dialect of Guangdong, nowadays China, telling the story about her unfortunate experience. The girl knows quite well about the Viking pirates, at the meeting when she and the Flake people discuss how to rescue the children, she gives the details on what the Viking pirates want, how to approach them, how to calculate the distance, and surprisingly, the topography of the destination. Lifu even knows the story and history of the treasure. And how does she know about these? Well, Lifu explains that she had selective course before. On the journey to the children, Lifu tells more about herself. Her family was poor, and could not afford the taxes, and her father wanted to sell her to the King. Her mother refused, and told her to go far away. So, she goes abroad with the Chinese National Circus.

I don’t know if the filmmaker wants to vaguely criticize China
with high tax rates, or something else. But that the girl’s father wants to
sell her to the king is absolutely invalidated. In ancient times, the King can
have any girl as his wife across his kingdom, not only in China. The King disdains
to purchase and doesn’t have to purchase the girl, and the father will not sell
the girl to the King. That Lifu is sold to a landlord would be more narrative.
Of course, it is more wonderful if Lifu goes bak to China together with her Circus,
after married to the big guy. A big reunion, huh?

The Chinese
people never go so far that time.

Well, first, let’s talk something about the Vikings. The period from the earliest recorded raids in the
790s until the Norman Conquest of England in 1066 is commonly known as the Viking Age of Scandinavian
history. Vikings used the Norwegian Sea and Baltic Sea for sea routes to the south. The Normans were descended
from Vikings who were given feudal overlordship of areas in northern France—the Duchy of Normandy—in the 10th century. In that respect, descendants of the Vikings
continued to have an influence in northern Europe. Likewise, King Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, had Danish ancestors. Two
Vikings even ascended to the throne of England, with Sweyn Forkbeard claiming the English throne from 1013 – 1014 and his son Cnut the Great becoming king of England from 1016 – 1035.
Here we know the time span of the Viking Age.

Second, What about China during the Viking Age? The Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Tang Dynasty (960~1279) are the two famous dynasties.
The common of the two dynasties is that their shipbuilding industry, seamanship
and navigation are highly developed. Traders with ships full of various goods,
such as chinaware, silk, priceless treasures, and so on, travel around the
world. The shipping routes are known as the Sea Silk
Road. According to historical records, the Road in
the Tang Dynasty (618-907) and the Tang Dynasty are basically the same. The Road begins from
Guangzhou City of China, then across southeast Hainan Island, along the east of
the Indochinese Peninsula, across the Siam Bay, then to the south by Malay, to
the southeast Sumatra Island, to the Java Island, then to the west along Malacca Strait, crossing the Bay of Bengal by Nicobar
Islands, to Srilanka, then to the west along the west coast of India Peninsula,
across the Arabia sea, along the Hormuz Strait to Abadan of Persian Gulf end,
against Euphrates River to Basra, to Baghdad after thousands of land route. And
from the Persian Gulf, along Southern coast of Arabia Peninsula, to Bab el
Mandeb Strait by Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, and down south to coastal countries of East
Africa. It took 90 days from Guangzhou to Basra, and 48 days from Basra to Dar
Es Salaam.

And here is the problem. The Suez Canal that
links the Mediterranean and the Crimson Sea was opened to ships in November 17, 1869. Any Chinese ship
would never appear in Northern Europe sea before that time unless the ship sailed
on the land pulled by human, as the film tells it.
The post The beautiful Chinese girl in Vicky the Viking first appeared on On Film.
